Your Local Guide to Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg & Sevierville Events This August 2026

August in the Smokies always sneaks up on us. Summer crowds are still here, kids are gearing up for a new school year, and somehow the events calendar gets even busier before fall color season hits. Here's what's actually worth your time this month, plus a routing tip that'll save you from sitting in traffic to get to any of it.

NightFlight Expedition Opens at Dollywood — August 19

The biggest news of the month isn't a festival, it's a ride. Dollywood's new $50 million indoor attraction, NightFlight Expedition, opens to the public August 19 in Wildwood Grove. It has the full ride specs, height requirements, and our take on why the “indoor” part matters for rainy-day planning.

Appalachian Craft Fest — August 13-16, Gatlinburg

Held at the Gatlinburg Convention Center, this festival celebrates regional handcrafted work, from traditional Appalachian techniques to modern makers putting their own spin on the craft. It's an easy half-day stop if you're looking for something slower-paced between park days, and it's a genuinely good spot for gifts you won't find in a parkway shop.

Great Smoky Mountain Hot Air Balloon Festival — August 15, Townsend

This one's become a favorite for a reason. From 3 to 9pm at the Townsend Visitor Center, professional balloonists light up the evening sky with a balloon glow and offer tethered rides against a Smoky Mountain sunset. Presale general admission runs $10 for adults, kids 10 and under are free, and parking is $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. It's rain or shine, so check the forecast but don't count on a refund if you skip it. Townsend sits on the quiet side of the park, about 30 minutes from Pigeon Forge, so budget some drive time.

Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion — August 20-22, Pigeon Forge

Now in its 14th year, this is one of the largest Jeep gatherings in the country, drawing more than 50,000 people to the LeConte Center. Even if you don't own a Jeep, the sheer variety of custom builds on display is worth a walk-through, and the parkway gets a noticeably different energy that weekend. Show hours run 8:30am to 5pm Thursday and Friday, and 8:30am to 4:30pm Saturday. Adult tickets are $20, kids 6-12 are $10, and it's available at the gate only.

Coming Later This Month: Bear-Varian Fall Festival at Anakeesta

If your trip stretches into late August, Anakeesta's Bear-Varian Fall Festival kicks off August 28 and runs into November, with each village transformed for the season. It's early, but if you're already dreaming about leaf season, this is the first real sign it's on its way.

Local Tip: How to Skip the Spur Backup

With roadwork continuing on the Gatlinburg Spur this summer, the direct route between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg has been running slower than usual, especially during peak afternoon hours. If you're headed to the Craft Fest or just want to avoid sitting in it, cut over on Wears Valley Road to Line Springs Road and through Metcalf Bottoms instead. It's a longer way on paper, and a genuinely prettier drive, and most visitors never think to use it.
