Destin Fishing Rodeo 2026: How to Plan a Family Weekend Around It

  • Posted on

What is the Destin Fishing Rodeo?

The Destin Fishing Rodeo is a month-long fishing tournament held every October on Destin Harbor in Destin, Florida. The 78th annual rodeo runs October 1–31, 2026. Anglers fishing aboard registered boats compete in dozens of species categories, and catches are weighed daily on the docks at AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar, where anyone can watch for free.

2026 rodeo dates worth knowing

These come from the official Destin Fishing Rodeo events calendar. Check it again before you go, since event details can change.

Date What's happening
Tuesday, Sept. 29 Kick-off party at AJ's, 6 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 1 – Saturday, Oct. 31 Rodeo fishing; weigh-ins daily, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 4 Destin 5K Rodeo Run, Clement Taylor Park
Monday, Oct. 12 Kids Fall Movie Festival at AJ's (free movie, hot dogs, popcorn and snow cones)
Saturday, Oct. 31 Halloween on the Harbor
Thursday, Nov. 5 Awards ceremony at AJ's, 5:30 p.m.

The part first-timers tend to miss: you don't have to be here on opening day. Every weekend in October is a rodeo weekend.

How visitors can fish in the rodeo

There are three realistic ways in. Pick the one that fits your group, not the one that sounds most impressive on the drive down.

1. Book a charter on a registered boat

The rodeo states that entry is free for anglers who fish aboard boats registered in the Destin Fishing Rodeo. Book a trip on a registered charter and you're in. The rodeo keeps a searchable list of registered boats, and that's where we'd start before calling any captain.
Works best for: the family member who wants a real day on the water, or a group of adults hoping for a bigger fish.
Ask before you book: Is the boat registered for 2026? Is it a good fit for kids or first-timers? What happens if weather cancels?

2. Fish from a pier, bridge, jetty or the surf

The rodeo also has a pier, bridge, jetty and surf category. The 2026 registration page lists adults at $25 and anglers 14 and under free. That page doesn't name specific qualifying piers, so confirm your spot with the rodeo before you count on a catch being eligible.
Works best for: families with younger kids, and grandparents who'd rather fish for an hour or two than commit to half a day offshore.
If the pier sounds like your speed, our Okaloosa Island Pier guide covers what to expect out there.

3. Let the kids go after the one-pound mark

This is our favorite rodeo rule. According to the rodeo's Just for Kids page, children who enter a fish weighing one pound or more receive a rod and reel and a certificate. Check the current rules for eligibility before heading to the scales.
The goal is reachable, and the reward goes home with them. Better than anything in a gift shop.

Do you need a Florida fishing license?

It depends on where you fish. Here's what the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says:

  • Kids under 16: No license needed.
  • On a licensed charter boat: Anglers on a for-hire vessel with a valid charter license are exempt, residents and non-residents alike.
  • On a licensed pier: Anglers fishing from a pier with a valid saltwater pier license are exempt. The Island Pier on Okaloosa Island says its daily fishing pass includes the license.
  • From the beach, surf or a jetty as a visitor: Non-residents 16 and older need a non-resident saltwater license. FWC lists 3-day ($17), 7-day ($30) and annual ($47) options, with handling fees extra. Florida's free shoreline license is for residents only.

Our practical recommendation: sort out licenses before you leave home. It's one less thing to figure out with a cooler in one hand and a toddler in the other.

Watching the weigh-ins (the part non-anglers love)

Weigh-ins happen every day of the rodeo on the docks at AJ's Seafood & Oyster Bar, 116 Harbor Blvd. in Destin, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. They're free and open to the public.

This is where the rodeo stops being "Dad's fishing thing" and turns into a family outing. Kids with zero interest in bait still want to see what came off the boat.

What we'd tell a friend:

  • Plan for late afternoon. It rolls naturally into dinner on the harbor.
  • Park once and walk. The rodeo points visitors to parking along Destin Harbor, including a city lot at Marler Street and Harbor Boulevard. Check posted rates when you arrive.
  • Keep it short with little ones. For most young kids, an hour on the docks is plenty. Leave while they're still having fun.

A realistic three-night rodeo weekend

If you're comparing Okaloosa Island vacation rentals for a rodeo trip, check what the property already provides before you pack the car. Then plan loosely. Here's how we'd sketch a Friday-to-Monday trip for a mixed group.

  • Friday: Arrive and slow down. Check in, walk to the beach, keep dinner simple. An easy first night pays off all weekend.
  • Saturday: The fishing day. The anglers head out on a registered charter. Everyone else takes the beach morning. In the late afternoon the whole crew meets at the weigh-in at AJ's, then stays on the harbor for dinner.
  • Sunday: The island day. Keep it close. Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park and the Okaloosa Island Pier are both on Okaloosa Island, so a morning at one and a sunset walk at the other doesn't require much driving at all. The Gulfarium's posted hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with admission closing at 3:30 p.m.
  • Monday: Leave without rushing. Pack the car after breakfast, not before.

One big thing per day. The mistake we see most often is stacking a charter, the Gulfarium and the harbor into one day. The fish won't care. The kids will.

Which October weekend fits your family?

  • Oct. 2–4: Opening-weekend energy, plus the Rodeo Run on Sunday.
  • Oct. 9–12: Columbus Day weekend, with the Kids Fall Movie Festival at AJ's on Monday, Oct. 12. Our pick for families with school-age kids, if your district has that Monday off.
  • Oct. 16–18: Bruce Cheves Day and the Ringing of the Bell is Friday, Oct. 16, at 5 p.m. Otherwise, a simple rodeo weekend.
  • Oct. 23–25: Pair the rodeo with Gulfscarium at the Gulfarium, listed for Oct. 24–25. Check the Gulfarium's site for details and tickets.
  • Oct. 30–Nov. 1: Halloween on the Harbor is Saturday, Oct. 31. Pack costumes.

One honest note: October is still Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through November 30. Plenty of October weekends are beautiful, but read your rental's cancellation policy and your charter's weather policy before booking. That's not worry. It's just good planning.

Mistakes we see first-time rodeo visitors make

  • Assuming it's only for boat owners. A registered charter or the pier category gets you in.
  • Packing like they're outfitting a campsite. If your rental already has a beach cart, chairs and a cooler, leave yours at home and use the space for tackle.
  • Over-scheduling Destin. The slower weekend is usually the one everybody remembers.

Why Okaloosa Island works as a rodeo home base

Okaloosa Island sits between Fort Walton Beach and Destin on Florida's Emerald Coast, on the west side of the Destin Bridge. The rodeo describes its home on Destin Harbor as about a quarter mile east of that same bridge. So staying on the island keeps you close to the weigh-ins without sleeping in the busiest stretch of the harbor.

The quiet days get easier, too. The Gulfarium, The Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island and the Okaloosa Island Pier are all right there on rest days. New to the area? Our Okaloosa Island travel guide is a good place to start.

Plan your rodeo weekend with Treasured Stay

Treasure by the Sea is a four-bedroom vacation rental on Okaloosa Island, between Fort Walton Beach and Destin, that sleeps up to eight. It works well for the kind of trip this guide describes, where the anglers and the beach people travel together.

A few details that matter for a rodeo weekend:

  • Four bedrooms: a king, two queens and a twin-over-full bunk room, so early risers heading for the dock don't have to tiptoe around everyone else.
  • Beach gear already there: beach cart, chairs, umbrellas, a cooler and beach toys, so your trunk has room for rods.
  • About a five-minute walk to the beach, plus a shared community pool for the non-beach hours.
  • A fully equipped kitchen and laundry for early breakfasts and sandy, salty clothes.
  • Dog-friendly for up to two dogs, 40 lbs or less each.

Book directly and you're talking to the people who know the house and the area. Ask which October weekend suits your group, or what the drive to the harbor looks like on a Saturday afternoon.
